This week we worked with a new online digital story telling tool called www.storybird.com.  The studetns are having a blast creating stories!  We are working with our buddies to create a story about friendship.  As soon as those are done I’ll post those as well.

The Fighting Ground & Tolliver's Secret

The Fighting Ground & Tolliver's Secret

For the second week now we have been reading two different books. The boys have been reading a book called The Fighting Ground.  The Fighting Ground, is about a thirteen year old boy who wants to fight in a war, and then he finally gets his chance. But his parents don’t know. It also does not go well.

On the other hand, the girls are reading a book called Tolliver’s Secret. It is a book about a girl named Ellen Tolliver she is 10 years old she is sent out by her grandfather who is a patriot spy, but has been injured. So he sent Ellen to deliver a message to one of her grandfathers’ friends.

For the past few weeks we`ve been doing a unit called A World in Motion.  It is a very fun unit, we split up into 10 teams of 3`s and 4`s.  Each team had to choose a name and make a balloon powered car made out of cardstock, old push pop sticks and topper, and elbow grease.  We were just like engineers, we tested to make sure that the car went straight, that the car could go far, carry weights, and go straight with a balloon. It was hard at times, like when the balloon caught on the wheels of the cars or when the cars wouldn`t go straight, but in the end we all had a great time and our final cars look amazing, here are some examples a bumble bee, a crab, or an American Flag and that`s just a few there`s 7 more where that came from plus the 2 other classes.

I hope that everyone had a fabulous mid-winter break!  But now it is back to work.  There is a lot going on in fifth grade this week.  We continue with our jet toys building the chassis and then testing. Later in the week we will be adding a balloon motor to it! Brush off those math skills too!  We will continue our work with positive and negative numbers.  Look for a test at the beginning of next week.

So how was break?  Can’t wait to hear all about it!!

Today our fifth grade students headed into the computer lab for some work with synyoymn.  The students used the theasuarus in MicrosoftWord to create a list of synonyms for tired words.  We wanted to find new words to replace words like: said, happy, fun, sad, big, tall, etc.  Here is a sampling of our work!
